When I was growing up, I had a phobia of sorts for maths. In the UK, we call it maths. My maths skills started to improve when I had started junior college. I have decided to start my own independent study of maths. I have ongoing health issues. However, I will do what I am capable of doing. As self directed learning plays a huge part in DIY-U, I will find the necessary resources and I will teach myself. I will evaluate my learning. I am not interested in gaining a certificate or certificates for my maths studies. There are many self taught mathematicians in history. I am not saying I want to become a mathematician. However, I do want to improve my skills in this subject. I will conduct my studies at my own pace and I will most likely continue with the practice until I decide to end the self initiated learning project of my own creation.   Research or more specifically, basic research, plays a big part in DIY-U. I will write more about basic research in future posts. DIY-U is quite a few things. It is a form of Home Education as the majority, if not all, of the learning and research is undertaken in our homes. The learning from home concept doesn't seem so strange or different at this moment in time. This is due to the Corona virus outbreak. Universities have elected to use online methods in order to teach students with as a result of COVID. Efficient Home Education. I like the quote above. What's better? An open mind or one which is rigid and inflexible. I would aim to have an open mind. I have been researching self directed learning, research and related subjects for quite a few years now. When I was growing up, the internet and social media did not exist. I did not know that home education was legal during my high school years. I grew up in the UK. I had moved to the USA for 16 plus years too. I am back in the UK at present. I am impressed with the UK Home Education regulations. They are very flexible. I have had discussions with people, regarding home education. These people were educated through traditional brick and mortar schools. It was no point in me having these discussions as these people were not open to hearing about the benefits of home education. These articles have been stored in my ever expanding knowledge base. I use external hard drives, usb flash drives and even dvds to store the data onto. I have printed out some of these articles. As you are aware, most universities encourage students to participate in extra curricular activities or to take up hobbies etc. This is true with DIY-U as well. It's not healthy for students to study all of the time and to not balance things with other activities. I have recently gotten back into Frisbee and flying disc throwing.
